While founded upon an old family collection, the Jiyuanshanfang Collection has been supplemented by acquisitions from dealers and auctions.
The works of the collection were partially compiled by Jiyuanshanfang into a catalogue titled “Song Ceramics: The Eight Kiln Groups” in 2008, with its Foreword written by Mr. Li Zhiyan, who is Research Fellow both at Beijing Palace Museum and China National Museum of History, Professor of Graduate Studies at Archaeology Department in Beijing University, and Vice President of the Ancient Chinese Ceramics Research Institute. The catalogue’s Preface was contributed by Mr. Martin Lorber, who is the former Sotheby’s New York Director and Founder of Asian department.
The Jiyuanshanfang’s first exhibition was held from March 8 to June 24, 2012 at Morris Museum in New Jersey. Morris Museum was established in 1913, the first museum in New Jersey to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1973. The exhibition “Harmony in Clay: the Elegance and Refinement of Song Ceramics” exclusively showcased 108 works from the Jiyuanshanfang Collection. Christie’s International Academic Director Ms. Rosemary Scott was the guest lecturer at the opening reception. In her insightful lecture “Artistic Refinement and Technological Innovation: Chinese Ceramics of the 10th – 14th Centuries”, Ms. Rosemary highlighted and positively commented the Jiyuanshanfang Collection. National television PBS Channel-Thirteen’s NYC-ARTS primetime program aired the Morris Museum exhibition at 8:00 PM on May 3, 2012. The influential NYC-ARTS program was hosted by Mr. Philippe de Montebello, the former Head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition was also selected by New Jersey’s largest circulated newspaper The Star-Ledger as Art Critic’s Choice, complimented by international press Asian Art Newspaper and New York based local Chinese television NTD.
From February 19 to May 24, 2015, Jiyuanshanfang lent early Chinese ceramics to a large scale exhibition “High Tea: Glorious Manifestations – East and West”, organized by Ms. Laurie Barnes, the Elizabeth B. McGraw curator of Chinese Art at Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, Florida. Norton Museum of Art is the largest art institute in Florida and Ms. Barnes was one of the authors of “Chinese Ceramics” published by Yale University Press. Among 135 works of art including eastern and western wood furniture, costumes, paintings, ceramics/porcelains, and other decorative master pieces, 6 Song ceramic works of tea culture had been selected from the Jiyuanshanfang collection. On top of Norton Museum’s own collection, other contributions to the show were from such notable collections as of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Art, Chicago Art Institute, Canadian Montreal Museum of Art, and etc. Mr. Robert Mowry, who is the former Head of Department of Asian Arts at Harvard Art Museum and Senior Consultant on Chinese and Korean Art at Christie’s New York, delivered an informative lecture, discussing on the subject of Korean ceramics with comparison to Chinese Song ceramics. The exhibition was affirmatively praised by national media coverages from Elle Décor, Wall Street Journal, as well as renowned Asian Art Newspaper.
