Mr. Li Zhiyan studied archaeology at History Department, Beijing University, in 1956. After graduation in 1962, he began working in the Palace Museum, Beijing, where he enjoyed eighteen year tenure in research at the Museum’s collection of Chinese ceramics. He headed the Palace Museum’s Archaeological Research Team to conduct excavations in the Longquan kiln site in Zhejiang Province. As Director of the Archaeology Department in Chinese National Museum of History, since 1979, he continued his ceramic research work and his extensive field research involved kiln sites across the considerable breadth of Chinese mainland. His credentials reflect impressive achievements that include Research Fellow both at Beijing Palace Museum and Chinese National Museum of History, Professor of Graduate Studies at Archaeology Department, Beijing University, and Vice President of the Ancient Chinese Ceramics Research Institute. He has authored more than two hundred articles and essays on ceramics worldwide. Mr. Li has lent his authorship to ten major specialized studies such as “A History of Chinese Ceramic Culture” and “The Art of Chinese Glazed Pottery”. His many lectures have been enjoyed throughout Japan, Korea, and some Southeast Asian countries. Presently Mr. Li partnered with Yale University to produce “The Chinese Ceramics”, part of a series entitled “The Culture and Civilization of China”, under the sponsorship of the former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. “The Chinese Ceramics” embraces a historic compilation of the finest Chinese ceramic works drawn from notable museum collections worldwide. Mr. Li has lent his expertise and poignant insights while serving as Chief Editor.
