About Mr. Li Zhiyan (李知宴）

Mr. Li Zhiyan studied archaeology at History Department, Beijing University, in 1956. After graduation in 1962, he began working in the Palace Museum, Beijing, where he enjoyed eighteen year tenure in research at the Museum’s collection of Chinese ceramics. He headed the Palace Museum’s Archaeological Research Team to conduct excavations in the Longquan kiln site in Zhejiang Province. As Director of the Archaeology Department in Chinese National Museum of History, since 1979, he continued his ceramic research work and his extensive field research involved kiln sites across the considerable breadth of Chinese mainland. His credentials reflect impressive achievements that include Research Fellow both at Beijing Palace Museum and Chinese National Museum of History, Professor of Graduate Studies at Archaeology Department, Beijing University, and Vice President of the Ancient Chinese Ceramics Research Institute. He has authored more than two hundred articles and essays on ceramics worldwide. Mr. Li has lent his authorship to ten major specialized studies such as “A History of Chinese Ceramic Culture” and “The Art of Chinese Glazed Pottery”. His many lectures have been enjoyed throughout Japan, Korea, and some Southeast Asian countries. Presently Mr. Li partnered with Yale University to produce “The Chinese Ceramics”, part of a series entitled “The Culture and Civilization of China”, under the sponsorship of the former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. “The Chinese Ceramics” embraces a historic compilation of the finest Chinese ceramic works drawn from notable museum collections worldwide.  Mr. Li has lent his expertise and poignant insights while serving as Chief Editor.

About Mr. Martin Lorber

Mr. Lorber comes from a family of Old China Hands and his professional work in the area of Asian art includes fourteen years with Sotheby’s New York as Director and Founder of the Japanese/Korean/Himalayan/Indian/Southeast Asian Department. He has acted as Consultant at Christie’s New York, Nagel’s Stuttgart, Doyle’s New York and for collectors, dealers, foundations and museums in the United States and Europe. He has contributed to numerous publications, including Christie’s New York 100 Masterpieces from the Collection of Walter A. Compton, the Christie’s New York auctions of the Compton Collection, advised on Lacquer from the Collection of Roger Weston and authored The F. Gordon Morrill Collection,  Chinese Yuan and Ming blue and white porcelains, for Doyle’s New York in 2003 in which a rare Chinese Yuan blue and white porcelain flask sold for $5,831,500, then a world auction record for Chinese porcelain. Other contributions have been to Arts of Asia, The Art Newspaper, the 1991 catalogue essay for The International Asian Art Fair, New York, and other publications. He is also the principal American contributor and correspondent to The Asian Art Newspaper, London, and has been a featured Asian art appraiser for the American Antiques Roadshow. He also lectures on Japanese swords, Buddhist iconography, Chinese & Japanese gardens and Chinese cosmology. He received his Batchelor of Arts in Art History from the University of North Carolina, a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture and studied towards his PhD in Art History at the Courtauld Institute, University of London.
